Houses of Oia

Over breakfast, looking out at the sparkling, crystal blue of the water and the horizon that seemed to stretch on forever, Mom pronounced that this was a dream come true for her–to have all of us here in Oia together. She said that out of all her travels and the amazingly cool places she’s visited, Santorini is probably her favorite. She seems to always come back here (this is her 4th time) and I can imagine why.

It was late at night when I first stepped onto the Main Street of Oia; I wasn’t sure what I was expecting but all I know is that it felt to me like I had just walked into Disneyland. I was in awe… we all were. It was all so surreal and we weren’t even looking in broad daylight yet! When I went outside the next morning and had recovered from my momentary blindness the first thing I saw–besides the ostentatious blue of the never-ending sky and sea–were the houses. It was true. We were literally on a cliff.

Almost every house and building was white and the churches I saw with their famous blue painted dome-roofs were all-in-all captivating. It was this; something about the architecture fascinated me. But it didn’t stop with the outside. The inside of our house was just as incredible. The back half was, well, all truly a cave (hence the name Lydia Cave House) that’s 300 years old and carved out of volcanic rock from the volcano that erupted nearly 3,500 years ago! …Oh, and you can’t forget the “hot” tub 😉
